Separation Anxiety Disorder

Separation Anxiety Disorder is generally limited to small children. It manifests itself at about the time children must attend primary school. However, as children mature, they may experience particular fears, such as kidnapping.

Diagnostic Criteria

Separation anxiety may be associated with other psychotic disorders; however, this diagnosis is limited to specific anxiety related to separation and not part of a generalized anxiety disorder. A child may experience some unusual perceptions particularly at night; this is due to a misreading of an actual stimulus (unlike hallucinations).
